There is a new holiday on the calendar this season--"A Hero's Holiday"--to celebrate the contributions of the legendary John "Buck" O'Neil to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and to the world. Here in the "House that Buck Built," the NLBM will have a day long community celebration featuring the things that Buck O'Neil loved; education, music and friends. Here are some of the scheduled highlights:
A BUCK FOR "BUCK": All day long, visitors can see the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum for the low price of $1.00 (regular price $8.00) for adults. Children under 12 years old will have fee admission (children must be accompanied by a parent).
BASEBALL BOOKFAIR FOR YOUTH AND ADULTS: (9:00 am - NOON) The Kansas City Public Library will be on hand to showcase books from its collections. Library members can even borrow books on site!
The Extra Inning Museum Store will also highlight its baseball books at reduced prices, with special opportunities to children to purchase books about the Negro Leagues and baseball at reduced prices.
A CIVIC SALUTE: (10:00 am - 11:00 am) Formal morning program featuring local civic leaders, members of the board of directors and NLBM leadership to officially mark the day as "Buck" O'Neil Day.
BIRTHDAY CAKES: Several cupcakes will be served to guest as part of the Buck O'Neil birthday celebration
EXTRA INNING SAVINGS: There will also be special discounts available on Extra Inning Museum Store merchandise.
IT'S ALL JAZZ: Hours of live jazz music will be performed between Noon and 4:00 pm in the atrium of the Museums at 18th & Vine. Scheduled are the Valerie Price Trio (between Noon -- 2:00 pm) and Wes Blackmon (between 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm).
