Looking Him Back |

18" x 24" print
"I wanted the painting to have a long ago look, complete with faded edges, cracks, and wrinkles. Yet, the piece had to portray the dignity of a people forced to live through a shameful time in our history. It had to produce a mood that was more than a game, more than a pitcher holding the runner on first with an I dare you look with eyes that saw but were not seen. At the same time, it had to show that Americas shame was, indeed, the pride of a disenfranchised people forced to unify and to become more self-reliant. It had to speak quietly to the fact that there was once Negro Leagues in America and that fact alone taught me more American history than any speech by Roosevelt, Truman, or Eisenhower. If the piece accomplishes a mere third of what I wanted it to do, then, it is valid."--Lonnie Powell
