This Veterans Day, we want to honor and salute players in the Negro Leagues that doubled as heroes off the field as well. Listed below, but not limited to, are players that served in the military. 

John J. “Buck” O’Neil – Navy (1943 – 1945)

Jack R. “Jackie” Robinson – Army (1942 – 1944)

Bob Motley – Marine Corps (1943 – 1946)

Ernest “Ernie” Banks – Army (1951 – 1953)

Monford “Monte” Irvin – Army (1943 – 1945)

Larry Doby – Navy (1943 – 1945)

T R “Ted” Strong – Navy (1943 – 1945)

Henry C “Hank” Thompson – Army (1944 – 1945)

Dan Bankhead – Marine Corps (1943 – 1946)

Emmett Wilson – Army (1944 – 1945)

The list is far more extensive and includes many more players that risked their lives to protect the lives of this country. We couldn’t possibly begin to list every single player, but here at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, we appreciate our veterans and want to extend our heartfelt thanks for anyone who has served time protecting our country!
